Reindeer Headbands for the Whole Class
Share
Reindeer headbands for the whole class mean every kid leaves wearing antlers. Give each child a 2-inch brown cardstock strip sized to their head, two brown pipe cleaners twisted into antlers, a red pom-pom nose, and two googly eyes. An adult sizes and staples the band; kids do the rest. Twenty headbands take about 40 minutes start to finish.
What Supplies Do You Need for 20 Kids?
- Brown cardstock strips, 2 inches wide by 22 inches long, 20
- Brown pipe cleaners, 40 (2 per child)
- Red pom-poms, about 1 inch wide, 20
- Googly eyes, about half an inch wide, 40 (optional)
- Craft glue or glue sticks, 5
- Kid-safe scissors, 20
- Hole punch
- Stapler (adult-only)
- Staple remover (adult-only)
- Pencils
- Clear tape
- Paper plates, 20 (work trays that catch glue drips)
How Does an Adult Prep the Headbands?
- Measure each child's head: wrap a cardstock strip around the head just above the ears and mark the overlap point with a pencil. Add about 1 inch past the mark for the overlap, then trim the strip.
- Staple the overlap shut with two staples. The stapler is adult-only; staple on a table with the strip flat so no fingers get near the mechanism.
- Punch two holes about 1 inch apart in the front of each band, centered above where the child's forehead will be. The antlers thread through these holes.
- Cover each staple on the inside of the band with a small piece of clear tape. The tape keeps staple edges off the child's skin.
How Do Kids Build the Antlers and Face?
- Each child takes a paper plate work tray and places their band on it.
- Take one pipe cleaner and thread it halfway through one of the punched holes. Twist the short end around the long end two or three times so it locks in place.
- Bend the long end upward and fold side branches: pinch the pipe cleaner and fold 2-inch sections out to each side to look like antler tines. Fold the very tip back inward so no cut end pokes out.
- Repeat with the second pipe cleaner in the other hole. Kids can make both antlers match or go wild and asymmetrical; reindeer come in all shapes.
- Glue the red pom-pom in the center of the band for the nose and add two googly eyes above it. Let the glue set for a few minutes before wearing.
What Goes Wrong and How Do You Fix It?
- The band is too loose or too tight: an adult pulls the staples out with the staple remover and restaples with more or less overlap. Measuring first beats re-stapling later, but a quick fix takes seconds.
- Antlers flop sideways: twist the base tighter around the hole. A pipe cleaner twisted three full times stands up straighter than one twisted once.
- Pipe cleaner ends poke skin: fold every cut tip back on itself and pinch it flat, or cover the tip with a small piece of clear tape.
- Pom-pom pops off: it needed more glue and a longer press. Squeeze a pea-sized dot of craft glue on the band, press the pom-pom in, and hold for a slow count to 20.

Frequently Asked Questions
What ages can make reindeer headbands?
Kids ages 5 and up handle the antler twisting, pom-pom gluing, and decorating. Four year olds can join if a grown-up sizes and staples the band and pre-folds the antler branches, leaving the child the pom-pom and googly eye gluing. Kids under 3 should skip this one; the pom-poms and googly eyes are choking hazards.
How messy are reindeer headbands?
Plan for low to medium mess. Craft glue drips land on the paper plate work trays, and pipe cleaner bits fall on the table. Paper scraps from trimming strips go in the trash. No paint involved, so smocks are optional; roll up long sleeves so cuffs stay out of the glue.
How long do 20 headbands take?
Plan about 40 minutes. An adult needs about 10 to 15 minutes to measure, trim, and staple 20 bands; doing this before the kids arrive saves the session. Kids need about 20 minutes to thread, twist, and glue. Give the glue a few extra minutes to set before the reindeer parade.
Are reindeer headbands safe?
Yes, with three rules. The stapler is adult-only, every time it appears. Pom-poms and googly eyes can choke a child under 3, so keep small pieces away from toddlers and watch that younger siblings do not pocket them. Pipe cleaner cut ends poke, so every tip gets folded inward and pinched flat.
